You have to remember that customers are what make your job possible. It is your job to be nice to customers. It's hard sometimes but you just have to do it. I'm an assistant manager for a large retailer and I get all kinds of customers. The best thing to do is smile when you approach someone, ask them if they need help and then answer any questions they have or help them in any way you can. If someone is irate stay calm, don't argue back, this will just make things worse trust me! The best thing to do is excuse yourself and tell them you will get someone else to speak with them. This will often get the customer to calm down a bit and the next person can talk to them. If someone becomes verbally or even worse, physically abusive you don't have to take that, tell them to leave otherwise you will call the police. Not sure what type of business you are in but customers are a part of many businesses and must be handled professionally. Try asking someone who is good with dealing with customers how they handle it. Watch them work and try to use the techniques that they use. Also ask your supervisor for help with this. It really might be that your strengths can be utilized elsewhere rather than dealing with customers. I believe though that everyone can learn how to deal with customers, it just takes some effort and determination. You are on your way by admitting that this is a need of yours so continue on with it! Find a mentor who is willing to coach you and help you with this. Good luck!

I deal with customers all day long, so I know the attitudes you deal with. I deal with it by being sarcastic and friendly at the same time. Once they notice this they become very polite and respectful. Sometimes I put them in check before they even have a chance to get out of order. I command respect and you should to, people will respect you more, if you let them walk all over you they will. Try it sometime. PEACE!

Always Smile...practice this before you leave the house. Stay calm, listen to your customers and try be pleasant.

If you still find it hard to be "nice" at least you have admitted you have a problem with and have tried to change. Maybe you are just not a peoples person and not cut out for this kind of work...so look at alternative work.

Never address their insults - in fact, pointedly ignore them. A bored look works, as does a pleasant smile. They're upset and they want you to be upset too. Don't give them the satisfaction.

Address their complaint/the facts and if they deviate from that, ask a question or make a comment to get them back on track. It's important also when telling others what they/you can't do, that you also tell them what they (or you) CAN do in order to help resolve the situation.

Remember, if they treat you miserably, it's most likely because they are miserable. You can go home at night and leave the misery behind. Those pathetic souls carry it with them everywhere. Treat your bosses with pity. The only joy they have is in making you feel bad. It's up to you whether you let it get to you. You can decide that it isn't going to hurt. If you can't quite manage that yet, at least make up your mind to not show how bad you feel. If their insults and abuse don't have much effect on you, they will move on to another employee with thinner skin.

Sometimes customers are so angry when they get to you. I own a store, and have watched customers start to be mean to employees, and then I walk out to them, and knowing I'm the owner they simmer down. One time a customer said to me, "isn't the customer always right?" As if I were Mac Donalds. I looked at him, and said, "I'm not a hamburger joint" (i own a jewelry store). Sometimes the only way you can get a customer to simmer down is to recognize that they aren't mad at you, they just lost power and want power back. So, diffuse their anger, not by patronizing them, but listening to them, and letting them get it out. Once they have gotten their complaint out, they will slow down, and then you can be the voice of reason and be proactive in helping them. sometimes you can't help the person, and you just have to recognize that you don't have the answer. Sometimes saying you don't have an answer for them can help, and tell them that you know someone who does have the answer, and be proactive in helping them.

Try not to get emotionally effected by them. Remember that they do not know you so can not treat you bad because they do not like you. BUT - if they swear at you or are truly rude - rather report them to you supervisor or call someone else to handle them.

My advice is - get another job, you seems to have more potential to work with people in a different setup.

Don't take anything they say personally, always smile and be polite.Make sure you do everything you can do for them and also make sure they leave happy, once they have gone you can call them all the names under the sun!The public are the worst people to deal with they are so rude but just remember its your job, don't let them get the better of you.

Always put on a nice sincere smile. Talk in a calm soothing voice. Greet them and ask how you may assist them and listen to them. Repeat what they've said. Avoid using words like "YOU" "YOUR" because they just fan the flames. Be attentive because all they really want is for someone to hear what they are really saying and something to be done.

Simply.....remember it's your job, and ask yourself if you like the nice things that paycheck buys for you. Why is this so hard?? The world is full of good people and jerks......of course your going to run into them at work too! People normally settle down once their concerns have been heard and are treated respectfully........start there. And smile.....it's hard to be nasty to someone who is smiling at you.
