If your life has been effected by Hurricane Katrina, please tell us how.

For many of us it just means watching another news special on TV. For some an increase in our insurance bill.

But for some of you, it must have been devastating. You may have lost a loved one, your home, your job, or even more.

Please tell us how the hurricane has effected your life.

I don't live in the Gulf Coast region, but I do have family there and worrying about whether or not they were alive was a big impact for me. Some of my cousins had to attend college in another state because of the hurricane.
For me, the hurricane has had a political and social meaning. The hurricane unraveled so many problems that were known to this nation, but never discussed or talked about. All of a sudden the hurricane damage is shown on TV and the masses of people suffering and it also unraveled social, financial and racial divides. I also saw the extent of which hate and condemnation can go to. You have many people who blame the residents in general. Some persons are willing to blame no one else except Nagin. I say that the government had problems on all levels when it came to handling Katrina. I also saw how New Orleans had other problems that needed to be solved before the hurricane(i.e. the levees). The wake of the disaster also gave me a bigger sense of pride in the city I was born in(New Orleans). I was born there but left at the age of about 1/2 of a year old. I never took pride in the place of my birth until I got much older and when I saw New Orleans and the damage done to it by the hurricane, it hit home for me.
I saw disparities and bias in the media. You had some new broadcasters who would only give one side of the situation that was going on in New Orleans. You could see the racial disparities. Blacks were portrayed as the looters and whites were portrayed as hard-working and struggling to find food. The situation goes both ways. There are two sides to the stories. The wake of Katrina caused me to have less trust for the mainstream media. You can't always believe everything you see. There are two sides to every story.
It has also cemented in my mind that nothing is guaranteed. That is one thing I have learned.
It is sad, but it took a disaster to bring out the good in people. There were people all over the USA who were more than happy to reach out help to the people who needed. There is a story of a woman who lived in Louisiana who could not get financial help with college. After Katrina, she relocated to Utah and she got the help that she needed in Utah.I don't think anyone will ever forget this hurricane.

Yes. There are more bums in Atlanta now. I've even seen bums that were here well before Katrina holding up signs that they are Katrina victims in order to get more money.

There is a family of 5 that takes turns at the top of the ramp off the interstate collecting money. They have been doing that for 9 months now. Kind of makes you wonder how much 5 people can earn working at McDonalds.

Look, did you know that the Hurricane was going to do what it did? No..... Nobody did. And Bush if you research better actually told the state of Louisana to set a state of emergency. But of course you didn't catch that did you. And as well as blaming Bush on all the people stuck in LA, WHERE WAS THE DAMN GOVERNER? He or she was the one responsible for the calls that should have been made. And the people that were stuck down there should have been evacuated via the buses that were shipped north. But the GOVERNER did not allow that to happen. The GOVERNER should have enforced the mandatory evacuation when they first found out about the hurricane. But it comes back to the simple fact that YES, we were warned, but who would have thought?

Yes but not like you think. My son an ex-con (drug charges) could not get a decent job here He is a licensed electrician. Every time he went out the local police would follow him. Now he has a good job with the rebuilding and he is making something of his life.
