Same as with any six numbers (I'm assuming it's a big drum that sends out one number at a time):

6/40 x 5/39 x 4/38 x 3/37 x 2/36 x 1/35

And even I don't have enough time on my hands to do the claculation!

Not sure about the "neighboring pairs" part but the way to calculate winning a six from 40 lotto is

40x39x38x37x36x35

divided by

1x2x3x4x5x6.

A look at the calculator shows
2763633600
divided by
720 which equals
3838380.
so the odds of winning a six from forty lotto is one in 3838380. Another way of saying that is that there are 3838380 different combinations. Email me if you want a more in depth explanation about permutations and combinations (which is what this is). I won't make it too technical! :-)

You must remember that lotto is a game of luck. There is no such thing as probability. Any combination of numbers stand a chance to win, provided that the luck is on your side. Even numbers that are in line like 12, 13, 14 20, 30, 40 stand a good chance of winning.

If you like this kind of thing, you'll probably also like the (free) lottery probability system they talk about here:
