Using Outlook express ... when I delete a message from my inbox that has been READ it doesn't end up in the "Deleted Items" folder. It just goes out into cyberspace somewhere.

If the message is UNREAD it goes into the "Deleted Items" folder. I've used this program for years and this is a recent development..

Have you tried compacting and/or cleaning out your inbox? Sometimes if you have too many messages in your inbox they begin to disappear into thin air. I am assuming you have folders as well as your main inbox, if not, create some and start sorting your mail there.

To clean up your inbox, click "tools" then "options" then "maintenence."

To compact your inbox and subfolders click "file" then "folder" then "compact all folders." You cannot have any email messages open when you do this, or you will get an error message. It may also take awhile if you have a lot of mail stored there.

To create subfolders: right click on "inbox" then "new folder"

If all else fails you can retrieve your deleted messages with a program called Mail Navigator, although it isn't free. Try the other suggestions first and see if that doesn't help.

The program may be corrupt. Back up all of your folders and then reinstall the program.
