Top level domains, like com, net, and org were meant as a way of organizing websites into categories like company, internet provider, and non-profit org. There was no enforcement of that, so the meanings of the TLDs have been lost.
There are two letter country TLDs like .us, .ca, .mx.
There are hundreds of TLDs.

Net is networks. Org is organization. Mil is military Gov is Government. Most of this I think is the level of what you can get into. Such as many Military sites you need a log on and password.

there is nothing different about the website, but it gives you an idea of what it is
generally .com is a company, .edu is a university/school, .ac.uk is a university/college in the UK, .org is a not for profit, .gov is a government site. .co.uk is a uk company and so on...

"Com" is supposed to be for commercial activities.
"Net" is supposed to be for network oriented entities.
"Org" is supposed to be for organizations.
In practice, however, there's no real difference.
As far as "cool" websites, there's tons. ;)
