That is the mystery of life itself. Man is not just a food consuming machine or bundle of tubes. There is an aim behind all these visible perishables.
Can evolution be so systematic in structure, performance and even the end???? I am unable to kill my quest just saying the whole things formed through casual incidences or a gradual growth (evolution).
Behind all these visible perishables, there stands a Silent Genius who caused the whole world to move on. Searching that talent must be the most valuable work a human being can do, being on this earth.
The day I meet Him, I don't know what my expressions will be. Let us wait and see.

Yes, you are quite right. Humans must be more than just consumers. And we are actually more than that, but unfortunately, now we are mostly in the bodily conception of life, meaning the consciousness that "I am this temporary, material body". The vast majority of human society is absorbed in this illusion. In reality, all life is ultimately spiritual. You, me, all life forms in all planets are part of the spiritual energy of the Lord, tatastha-sakti. When the jiva, or spirit soul, chooses to be an enjoyer and controller without God, he falls into Maya, the illusory potency of the Lord, and is covered by ignorance, characterized by a gross body of 5 elements and subtle body of 3 elements. Maya causes us think we can be happy in this material world without serving the Lord. But no matter how hard we try to do that, and no matter which planet or which body we may have, this attempt is completely futile. Our eternal constitutional position is to be engaged in the devotional service of the Supreme Lord. In that position will we have the eternal bliss and knowledge that we hanker for. Its a kind of paradox. The more we desire and work for our own selfish desires, the more unhappy we are. And the more we give up our selfish desires and work for the pleasure of the Lord, the happier we become. Service is our dharma, or eternal occupational duty. But service in the material world cannot bring happiness, whereas devotional service to the Lord brings immediate relief from the suffering of material life, unlimited bliss and complete knowledge.

Your description of human beings is relegating them to a level that below their created design. Of course there is more than just consuming food, there should be a consuming desire on the part of human beings to know their creator intimately. Human beings, stand apart from the rest of creation, as a special act of creation on the part of God. Human beings are unique and something wonderful about them, but sin mars that wonderful quality. Man (anthropos) referring to all people, is designed to know and enjoy God everyday.

Our ancient texts, vedas and upanishads describe that all life has come from 5 elements which we know as food.We come from food and also become the cause of fresh life.Food consumption is not only essential for life,we are also not allowed to abuse it-to save and protect life forever.Nothing more is required from men who are mortals.

The Bible does not agree with you but of course you probably don't believe in the Bible. You don't have to be some type of religious fanatic to believe in the Bible.
The majority of the people in the US do while in Europe the majority does not, I believe.
