We had to go out in the hall and get into a fetal position and cover our heads with our hands.....like THAT was going to save us.

I remember these drills also. We did not go into the hall, we would go into the school basement and get underneath the old desks and chairs that were stored there. Considering that asbestos was removed from that very basement years later...I highly doubt if that was adding to our safety in any way. In those days, that was thought to be the safest and most sensible thing to do. There are parts of the USA where you can still find the rounded airplane hanger shaped structures which were built for bomb shelters during WWII, and people are now living in them or using them for business offices; kind of a novelty, I guess. Thanks for the memory, hadn't thought about that for years. I actually have a Boy Scout handbook from the early 60's, which was my husbands; showing pictures of people lying in the street face down facing the curb and covering their head with their arms in case of an atomic bomb attack....How things have changed. Now we have to worry about people smuggling bombs onto planes and trains....I would rather be under a desk in the good old days. Have a good day.

Yes, I do remember them. Living in Oklahoma, we used the same basic move for tornados. A direct hit by an F-5 would probably have had similar results just without the radiation.

The only drills I remember is firedrills and hurricane/tornado disaster drills. The hurricane/tornado drill were much like the "atomic bomb drills" you mentioned. I think its more for crowd control than anything.

I was born in the 60's, but up here in Canada we never did that.

Oh, the memories; hiding under our desks.
Now that I think about it, it make me a little mad. Because they knew it wouldn't do any good.
