Sensex is nothing but an Index which represents the movement of selected securities. Each Stock Exchange selects on its own the securities which forms the basis for Sensex. Consequently the movement of those securities decides the overall sensex. Now those securities are influenced by various political and economical environments. Like the fuel prices, agricultural production, monsoon, floods, Governmental declarations, laws, state of economy world over, movement of other indices in the world like Nasdaq, Dow, etc. THe crude oil prices, any major international crisis or war. These are some of the factors which affect the sensex.

The main thing that influences a sensex is the shares/stocks held by an individual or an organization/company. If the shares held by an individual or a company is less at the end of the day as compared to his actual holdings, it called short position. The vice versa is called long position...The question u asked relates 2 a very vast domain.

Sensex is index for mumbai stock exchange,it comprises of 30 shares,all of them large companies like Reliance,ongc,STaTE bank and so. it is affected by movement of its 30 shares according to their weightage , and in turn they are affested by their own peformance, apart from this other exogenous factors are- political,general economy of nation, crude oils,behaviour of large fund investors,and by international events be it political or economic.
