Because the year is not an integer number of weeks, a year is ABOUT 52 weeks.

The year is a measure of how long it takes the earth to orbit the sun. A month is a convenient piece of a year that is slightly longer than the orbit of the moon around the earth, and a week is about one-fourth of a month (about how long a worker should work continuously without a break, "the Earth was created in 7 days" etc.).

A year is not an exact number of fortnights either.

The year is the only commonly used group of days that has a measurable physical origin. The other groupings are for convenience or of religious origin.

The number of weeks in a year is approximate. If you're using 52, you're off, because the real number is:

365 days/7 weeks = 52.142857142857142857...

People say there are 52 weeks because there are 52 WHOLE weeks in one year. You must count the days which don't add to an entire week as well to figure the exact number of days in one year. (if you use 52 to figure this out, you'll end up one day short. Hence, 52 x 7 = 364, BUT: 52.142857142857... x 7 = 365)

The number of weeks in a year is 52 and one seventh. This year for example, began on a Sunday and will end on a Sunday That's 52 weeks and a day.

Multiply that by seven and you get 364 (i.e. 52 times seven) plus 1 (one seventh times seven), which does equal 365.

This is the same answer as Surveyor gave, only expressed differently.
