They probably thought it was just as tough as we do today, struggling to pay bills, fighting with the boss and customers - all these things rouse the adrenalin 'flight or fight' response and get us going.

constant worry for food and fear of lightning/thunder( no weatherman!) and would have slept at dusk and woke up at dawn.

No pagers, no cellphones and no blackberrys, no computers and no office,school etc etc
