SO MANY REASONS
I am so sick of this "$5 for a cup of coffee" argument, people use it for everything.
2 things:
1 - Why are so many people trying to make me feel guilty about my coffeee drinking?
2 - COFFEE DOES NOT COST FIVE DOLLARS! You have to go way out of your way to spend five bucks. An Organic coffee, sugar free vanilla hazelnut triple soy latte might be up around $4.50 at a snooty coffe shop.
Coffee is an enjoyable delicacy to some people, or just something they drink in the morning. Either way, coffee is an inexpensive privilege, where as gas is something we helplessly have to buy. Coffee prices gradually increase like everything else in the world, gas prices fluctuate daily, and takes random jumps higher and higher.
The general public is at unrest about fossil fuels, whether they realize it or not. With the advent of Hybrids, the ignorance towards electric cars, and the press that bio-diesel has been getting, everyone realizes that there are probably better ways to transport themselves. Meanwhile, we're forced to pay 3.50 a gallon for something that not long ago cost 2.00.
I don't need 16 gallons of coffee every 10 days.

Because you can get a cup of coffee for $.50 to a $1 if you wanted to, but you choose to buy the $5 type. For gas, you are paying $3 or $3.04 and you really have no choice. You cant say, I'll just go buy the $.50 gas you wanted to.

Almost every morning on my way to work I stop at the local Quick mart and get a cup of coffee. They ground the beans fresh, have all the syrups and flavored coffee creamers and it costs a grand total of .79. Now every now and then I will give in to my Starbucks jones and get a latte, and yes it does cost a little more. But the bottom line on this is, I have to buy the Gas to get to work, to work all day(I,m a hospice nurse) and to get around on day to day activities. This costs me about $80.00 a week, to fill up a TOYOTA for goodness sake. You do the math, even with the occasional $5.00 cup of coffee, it still doesn't compare to what I spend on gas weekly.
Have a good day and a good cup of coffee.

I don't do that - but some may treat themselves on occasion.
As to the price of gas - it's expensive and considered a necessity, esp. for commuters. Not everyone lives in a city w/public transportation. People have no control over the prices, so it's not like they can choose to do without. It's not practical that everyone sell their homes or move their families to live closer to work. In addition, work places change and move, hire & fire and lay off. No one really knows how long they'll be in a certain job anymore (unless it's a govt job, but gee wouldn't we all like one of those). There is also the reminder everywhere you go - gas signs with prices.

This past weekend I went to Busch Gardens, and was paying about $3.00 for a .50 cent bottle of water. Actually the gas prices here have been going down a little, but I know not to get use to it, and for $5.00 I can buy about 2 pounds of coffee that will last me a month.

Gas is not a luxury for alot of people...people in rural areas do not have public transportation and usually have poorer paying jobs, and therefore older cars and really feel the brunt of it.
In European countries there is public transportation paid for by the high price of gas, but people have a choice. AND being smaller countries, the distances are not as far..AND they usually drive smaller more efficient cars.
As for coffee, it is a choice and some of us really don't drink the 5 dollar stuff, so they can put gas in their cars.

I would have to be on my death bed to pay $5 for a cup of coffee; however, I only drink a cup or two a day, so my car takes 15 gallons of gas or $40 to fill'er up.

because some people are ignorant of the fact that that $5 can buy food on the table, not much tho, & dont think that way. buying something expensive means they are up in the world, it gets eveyones attention. so a $5 cup of coffee means nothing to them. they can afford it! its called opposite thinking. they cant rationalize the diff between the two. i wont feel sorry for them when they dont have food on thier table & cant get to work because they spent it all drinking a$5 cup of coffee when they should have been looking for ways to conserve. let them complain then. i wont be hearing them, will you?

I can tell you that coffee here in Portugal (what you would call an expresso) goes for 64 cents. And I must say I do find our coffee much better than what is being sold in the US.
Gas prices are going up indeed, but you're right, there are other commodity prices being explored.
