Gandhi was a stretcher-bearer for the British medical corps in the Boer War. Churchill was a correspondent for the Morning Post, but participated in a semi-combat role en route to South Africa when the British Army Armoured train on which he was a passenger was ambushed and derailed; he took part in clearing the track and helping part of the train escape with the wounded, but was captured and held as a POW in a prison camp in Pretoria. Churchill escaped and with the help of an English mine manager was smuggled out of Boer territory, but returned to the fighting, ultimately joining the South African Light Horse Regiment of the British Army, becoming one of the first British troops to enter Ladysmith and Pretoria. He later wrote two books on the war, and of course his experiences helped get him elected to Parliament in 1900.

I don't think Churchill and Gandhi ever met in the war, but they did serve together, technically.

They were both in South Africa during the Boer War. I can't think of a battle, though. Gandhi was a lawyer and Churchill was a war correspondent.
