The best non drug pain killer is acupuncture.
I had it for arthritis in my knee 4 years ago and I have been pain free ever since. You should need three sessions lasting about 20 minutes each.

I haven't gotten one removed, but I assume it is going to hurt. The ink is under your skin, there is going to be no easy way to get it out. I think I heard somewhere that getting one removed hurts eve more then getting the actual tattoo.

There are some over the counter medications, like NSAIDS (Aleve, etc.) which may help, also icing or heating, whatever feels better (usually ice). Your doctor can also suggest/prescribe medications which would work.
