What is a "lap" but your thighs anyway???
Think about it "Come and sit on my lap" - what do you sit on???? The person's thighs!!!
I reckon it's just because "Hello, little girl, come and sit on Santa's thighs" would have just sounded too rude and wrong!! hahahahaha!!
Hey, now I've got the word "thigh" in my head - it's a stupid word - GRRRR that's really annoying!

It gets folded. When you sit, it is unfolded, that's why it comes into view.
