i assume you mean in the US.....
1. they can try him and remove him from office, but they dont get to try him unless the house votes to impeach him.
2. they can also override a veto with a 2/3 majority (of course the house has to agree).
3. they have to approve all presidential appointments (such as federal judges and cabinet position)
all of these things are in the constitution.

The Senate is not responsible for "checking" the President, but they can hold funding for many of the projects the President may have proposed and finally were enacted/legislated by the Congress.
It is not included in the Constitution. The Constitution only expresses the duties of each of the branches of government.

The Senate specifically, not the congress?
the congress declares war, not the president regardless of the Gulf Tolkin.
the congress makes law not the president although the president does have executive orders.
Even though a president can veto, the congress can still pass a vetoed law with a majority revote.
But Specifically to the Senate, it has its role in impeachment and advising the president and confirming nominations to differnt postitons from judges to UN. ambasadors... If the name Josh Bolten doesn't make you puke, your lucky. it has always been called the purse strings because they approve and appropriate spending.
so that includes military and domestic, security and such.
Purse Strings...hmm.
Have you ever heard about Iran-Contra.
Well heres a funny story, we were selling posion gas and weapons to Iraq to fight Iran. but then President Reagan wanted to fund and support the Contras in El Salvador.
Congress said no.
So Reagan sold weapons to Iran, and sold drugs through the CIA in order to fund the Contras.
hence the name Iran-Contra
Even though this is illegal it is one way a president can get money for operations congress says no too.
Don't worry everyone who was convicted was pardoned by the president immediately. and Two of those convicted are now in the current adminstrations.
take care.
