If we use Greek letters as symbols in maths, what symbols do the Greeks use when they're working out problems?

I was working in class today, and as I am not a maths teacher, I pondered on the different letters that were being used from the Greek alphabet, and I thought about algebra when we use symbols to represent something. I wondered what symbols the Greeks use.

We use greek letters (in italics or not), and sometimes we use letters from the latin alphabet, such as x,y,z (mostly in equations). And for the person saying Greeks don't know math....go to primary school.

Greeks are using same greek letters as we all do in the maths & science. But the difference is that they use them in italics, just to differenciate between the nowmal text & the denominations.
I happenned to see one greek maths page on the web, by mistake once & saw the thing & then came to the conclusion.
Just like we use hindi words in english spelled italicised to differenciate between THEY & they (in hindi), etc. The italics clearly indicates something different from normal text, most probably sometext of other language ( especially in literature).

why should not Greek use their letters to work out problems? They are proud of their letters to use as symbols in maths

If logic works in this case (but it usually doesn't), they should use our Latin alphabet. The word alphabet itself is Greek, by the way !
