They wear dance shoes - that's #1

They wear comfortable and nice clothes. Even for practises, people at my studio dress up nicely.

For Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep ladies wear long skirt, for Cha-cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive they wear shorter skirt. Nice stretchy pants are acceptible for practices and social dances too.

For man - just stay away from jeans...

Check out this site. You will find out what dance clothes for ballroom dancers looks like. (It doesn't have to be this expencive, but you'll get the idea as far as looks go) They have the lates ballroom fasion. This site has the best shoe selection I know - look in the "shoe sale" section.

Are you talking about competitions or just social dancing?

Competitions:
For waltz, fox trot, tango, viennese waltz, etc women wear long gowns.

For rumba, cha cha, swing, bolero, paso doble women wear short sexy dresses.

Practice - wear something comfortable, but not jeans.

The most important thing is to have dance shoes.

There are plenty of sites on the internet.

This site will give you a list of sites where you can find what you are looking for.
