I was thinking of renting a car in Athens, driving it north to the Turkish border (or somewhere close) and taking a bus or a train to Istanbul for my return flight home. but the car rental companies seem to take a huge sum for one-way car rentals. does anyone know of a way to get a one-way car rental that doesn't cost as much? how else can this be done?

I'm afraid it will cost you an arm and a leg and I don't think you can find a cheaper solution. If you haven't travel to Greece before, and especially if you haven't DRIVEN a car before on greek roads, I strongly suggest that you take a bus or train to the Greco-turkish borders and then rent a car on the other side of the borders (car rents are cheaper there, so a one-way trip from the borders to Constantinople would not be that expensive, plus it's a much smaller distance than the trip from Athens to the borders).

The trip from Athens to Thrace and the borders is a long arduous one... trust me, you will be better on a train or bus. If you want, you can break your journey into smaller parts (e.g. take a bus to Thessaloniki, stay some time there, do some sight-seeing, then take another bus for the borders).
Here are some links that can help.

One-way car rentals are always extremely expensive everywhere. The train service from Athens is good, and the scenery very beautiful to watch, rather than having to watch the road. There is also good bus service.

Take a bus or a train to reach the turkish borders and then rent a car in Turquie to reach your city, or continue by train or bus that they are cheaper. Have a nice drive!.

you will come across many such businesses in Athens, on the airport or interior the centre, on the initiating of Syngrou highway, all of us can help you recognize the form you will get there. yet there are a number of workplaces renting automobiles everywhere you bypass, cities and islands especially however, no longer mainland villages. costs are comparable everywhere i assume.
