Always carry a whistle around with you (don't laugh a good deterrent) and if you see a thing like this happening blow it hard then dial 999 for the polise. Hopefully the youths or whoever was doing the harassing the old lady would scarper before any harm was done to anyone.
No good going in like a bull at a gate as it could do more harm than good and after all it could be the case that the old lady was doing the harassing, you never can tell. Remember the TV advert where the lady drops her purse and we are led to believe that it was the youths intention to steal it but this turned out not to be the case.
However, if violence was involved I would interfere. No second thoughts on this score.

Great question. Being kind of a small woman myself, I'm apprehensive about approaching someone out of fear myself. But if an old person was being harrassed, I would feel terribly guilty not to do something. I suppose the best I could do is get out my mobile, take a picture of them and dial 999 and get ready to push it. If it was just verbal harrassment, I'd stay close but not interfere. If they were harrassing them in a physical way, I'd call the police right away and try to help the person.

Of course I'd stop them and escort the old lady on her way.
Good question though, because I'd still have to think twice. I think people are scared to confront youths today (esp. groups of) since we're always hearing of people being stabbed etc.
I'm not usually intimidated (or at least don't show it!!) because I'm a fair sized bloke. It's still worrying though, recently a man on his way home from a pub was kicked to death by a group of lads in a park. He wasn't weak or elderly either, just a middle aged dad on his way home.
These kids need harsh punishment to make them realise that there are consequences. Too many teenagers now realise that they can exploit laws that were created to protect children and do whatever they like with little or no come-back.

I would ask if the lady needed any help. If the youths got more agro I would call the police. I wouldn't try to intervene for the fear of getting stabbed!!!

I don't know. I think it depends on the situation exactly. I mean, if I am halfway bent over with cramps, I am not going to be likely to intefere - but I think in most cases I would try to help her somehow.

Tell the kids to FU CK off. then try and get the old lady somewhere safe. If the kids wanted to fight i guess that would be the last mistake they ever make.

I would not get involved, but stand closer to them (as if I was waiting to meet someone there) and see if they stop.
If they didn't, I may get more involved. It depends on what they were doing to harass her, and how youthful they are!

i would make sure they left the old person alone and if they refused i would give them a good old fashioned Glasgow kiss,
the old people of this world deserve respect and should be helped and hassled by the neds or anyone else including govt, who mess with their pensions,
we will all be old one day..
thanks
