It is the effect of the Epinephrine or adrenaline hormone. It is the hormone in human body that does the short-term stress reaction—the physiological response to threatening, exciting or environmental stressor conditions such as high noise levels or bright light (or Fight-or-flight response). It is secreted by the adrenal medulla. When released into the bloodstream, epinephrine binds to multiple receptors and has numerous effects throughout the body. It increases heart rate and stroke volume, dilates the pupils, and constricts arterioles in the skin and gut while dilating arterioles in leg muscles.
That blood that rushes to the face become visible as red cheeks.

We are using different colour patterns with body expressions to give specific signal to others about our emotions (angry, shy etc.) from ancient times. The biochemical changes with low pressure on the surface of cheek skin & more pressure in the blood vessels gives the red cheek look.

This happens to the fair skin, but for the dark skin their eyes goes red.
This generally happens when someone tell us some thing which is not acceptable to us -
Physically
Mentally
Emotionally
If it was just
Physically - You may hit him/her
Mentally - You can can give back a volly of words of the highest order.
Emotionally - It is within ur body, redness will (maybe ) frighten your opponent away.

It is an interesting link between your physical self and your mental self. What you find embarrassing or worth apologising for can be seen in an involuntary physical response.
