Cheap, cheerful, low maintenance, and they appeal to the poor dumb sods who have the leisure time to be able to sit down and watch that sort of tripe.

The audience is stay at home mums (and sometimes dads), the retired and the jobless. None of these tend to be in the market for the sort of edgy, gritty dramas along the lines of Murphy's Law or Prime Suspect, Battlestar Galactica or whatever. The TV companies give them what the majority of this market audience wants, which is bland, non-edgy, middle of the road fare with as much mental nutrition as a smack on the back of the bead with a tenderising mallet.

The audience want gruel, and that is what they get. Not because they don't know any better, but because they /do/ know what else they can get, and they don't want it.

Most TV is dumbed down. I don't watch TV and I don't think I'm missing anything. I have my own life to live and it is fullfilling enough to not watch overproduced fictional drama stories or sitcoms with gay people's unfunny lines. Oprah is overrated and so is Dr. Phil. Don't get me started on Tyra Banks, she is only about money.

I didn't watch the Emmys Sunday as I know that all it is is actors backpatting other actors.

It makes no difference in my life what they do. I go to work, earn a paycheck for the hard work I do.
News people are just as dumb. Why do they get paid so much just for reading a teleprompter?

Daytime TV is normally more basic because the revinues that TV channels receive from advertising are smaller than those at evening prime time. They cannot afford to produce lavish shows for daytime viewing. Also repeats are cheaper to broadcast because the production costs have already been met.

because its aimed at the unemployed mothers of this world and they are easy to please,
i think these programmers forget there is some men who work shifts looking for some entertainment as well(after all its us hard working men who pay the licence fee)
before you woman all go mental,i was only joking...the real reason is potential audience figures, the amount of millions who might watch a program decides what kind of stuff they show, during the day when lots are working they assume its not worth their while putting on good shows that cost cash for little return, thats why we get so many cooking programs, repeats abd gardeners world,, they cost nothing to make!!

thanks

It's because mind numbing is the most powerful tool of keeping good citizens such as bored housewives on "brain energy saving mode" forever
go read some books if you're so annoyed, at least bookshops don't dictate which books you can read at daytime and which at night time ;-)

Ask day time watchers!

It is not dumb, two segements are so different in their liking.

Ask a day time TV guy/gal s/he may find night tv horrible.

You know this is a real problem. Because, what if you were sick and stuck in bed, you could quite literally die of boredom between the soaps and the court tv stuff.

Cause only old people and students watch it! Students are recovering from their daily hangovers and old people are old, so they don't want anything to indepth and complicated do they! Or maybe the government makes the tv companies do it so it will make unemployed people want to go to work!

It's dumbed down for the dumbos that watch it. if they weren't dumb they would be out at work or doing something useful instead of sitting on their fat lazy ars*s teaching their children to watch Trishia.
