anant means unending and chaturdashi is the 14 th day of the fortnight.
because the idol of ganesh is immersed in the water on the 14th of the first fortnight of bhadrapad month it is chaturdashi and anant signifies that "although we have immersed the idol of the lord it is not the end" god is unending, god is forever.
