Surely this doesn't put anyone off getting them as I'm sure I'll look really bad when I'm 60 anyway. Not having a tattoo isn't going to make you an attractive old person or is it?

Tattoos don't look so good on older people for a few reasons. The skin tends to sag which causes the image to become less clear, the ink used for the tattoo fades and the skin tends to grow more hair, especially on a male whch covers the tattoo. Tattoos on older people tend to look like multicoloured blobs rather than a clear image because of these factors.

The other thing you need to consider is the psychological affect. As people grow older, their attitudes and priorites often change so when you are 60, your ideas might be different from when you were 18. Tattoos that seemed important and appropriate when you were young, now seem puerile and the tattoo no longer looks good to your eyes.

If an old person has a tattoo it takes away some of their dignity. It's not that old people without tattoos are necessarily attractive but at least they seem more dignified and do not have the mistakes of their youth on display.

Having said all this if one wants to get a tattoo that's fine. It's up to the individual to decide. Just remember, no one cares about your tattoo apart from you so it's up to you to get it right and do your research.

The tattoo would get all wrinkled and it won't have the shape it was supposed to have. What if you had a tattoo of a bullet hole, then it'll get all wrinkly and look like a butthole when you're 60. eew

it's only people without tattoos that say this.. i have 2 on my belly and they now have stretch marks on them from having my son but there is no way i'd have done anything different. i feel that tattoos are deeply personal and should reflect part of your life or tell a story. part of life is getting old, going saggy and gaining imprefections, i think my story is richer for these 'flaws' in my skin and if my tattoos reflect this then all the better!!!!

the "look bad when i get 60" excuse,,, is just that.

my granmother does have tattoos on her arms,,,, they look fine,,, and she thinks are just fine as well.......and i garantee you, she could give a rats azz what others think of them,,,,like she says,, the art is hers.. and others just show their ignorance by "concerning" themselves with what is hers and hers alone.

like the old saying goes,,,, those who have tattoos, do not care if you dont have any.

a parting note,,,, there is NOTHING that can be done to make a fresh tattoo look like its 50 years old,,,,, the aging part of the art is a beautiful thing in itself..... old tattoos are very beautiful,,, if they could only speak......

If you were a girl, I would say yes - it would look terrible. Can you imagine your grandmother with tattoos up her arms?

As you are male, you have to think about where they will go. Again, can you imagine your grandfather with something tattooed on his face? On his arm or leg - OK.

Why not just draw on yourself in felt tip... this way, you can change the picture and remove it when you want?

Personally I think tattoos are just vile and they always look cr@p.
I wouldn't have one, but each to their own, whatever makes you happy!

It'll look bad a lot earlier than that.

May look cool as a teen or in your twenties, but when your taking you daughter to school in your forties you'll just look like a common thug
