They're only funny to you. In the countries they come from they're normal.
I know a couple of guys called Kofi and before Annan and Gali The previous secetary generals were called Javier Perez de Cuellar which is pretty normal for a Peruvian and Kurt Waldheim which again doesn't sound too weird.
Maybe the UN should only select their Secretary generals from the home counties of England so their names are more normal.

Kofi Annan is a Ghanaian name (West Africa) and certainly don't sound funny to the locals. Bhutros means Peter just like Pedro in Portuguese. Ghali is a common name among the Coptic christian community in Egypt. If Kofi and Ghali name sound funny to you, so also will English names like Fairbrothers, Smith, Brown, Waterfall, Whitehorse, Stringfellows and Livingstone to non English.

The better question is why do we allow people to led the UN who are not from developed nations? Isn't the overall goal to develop the world to the same level. Would we be better suited to have a western leader take the control?
Another good question would be... Why does this US contribute 35% of the total UN budget when they go against everything we propose? Same thing could be asked of Japan they contribute25%.

They may SOUND funny to you, because none of them had an Anglo-Saxon background or name.
In their own countries their names sound perfectly normal.
Here you have them all with the country they were/are from.
Trygve Lie - Norway
Dag Hammarskjöld - Sweden
U Thant - Burma
Kurt Waldheim - Austria
Javier Pérez de Cuéllar - Peru
Boutros Boutros-Ghali - Egypt
Koffi Annan - Ghana

Because they're from non-English speaking countries.
Their names are only funny to you because you think non-English word sound funny.
You're a bigot. Open your mind. Otherwise, you'll be shocked when non-English speaking people laugh at YOUR funny sounding name.
