You have to apply for a new one at your nearest registry centre for births etc

The original is filed with the state Register. You may have lost a COPY. You didn't have the original to lose. Contact the state office and get a copy mailed.

You can get a copy from the Register office of where the birth was registered or alternatively online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

From the url above you will find much information re costs etc. that do vary.

Minimum details required are the full names and approximate date of event.

You can also apply in writing to General Register Office, PO Box2, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 2JD

Apply for a copy from the registry office in the area you were born, can be done in person or over the phone, costs about £7 or thereabouts

Contact the registry office where your birth was registered, i for a small fee, obtained a copy from my local office a year or so ago, they take your details, charge your credit card and put the copy in the post.

you can get a copy from the registry office where you were originally registered when born. you do need to pay but its not a great deal - under £20 i think. obviously you need to take other ID with you like passport

Go to or phone the regisery office you were originally registered at. At a cost of about £10 they'll give you another one.

Write or or phone the Registrar of Births & Deaths in the town you were born - I can't remember if there is a charge. Obviously they'll need your birth details!

I got one via the internet on the appropriate government department's web site about a year ago. I can't recall whether it was a pilot scheme or not but worth a try. Try a search on Google
