both lapops are in the same room (15 ft apart ).

You can get something called crossover cable -- it looks like Ethernet but the transmit and receive lines are reversed. However, it's easy to confuse with real Ethernet, so I'd get a cheap hub instead and connect both machines to it, or connect them both to a router. For them to see each other they really need to be on a LAN, or else they need to have "fixed" IP addresses and your ISP needs to have made them visible to the outside world. This is typically not done any more for individuals but some ISP's still do it (mine, SBC, used to).

Besides connecting them both to the same network, you could probably use a crossover network cable to directly connect the 2 computers to each other.

Too open-ended question, is playing that game all you want from this connection with your friend's machine?

Wireless adhoc mode without security set is best.
