I have to say, I wasn't fond of "baby" dolls as a child. But the adult figures in doll's houses could entertain me for hours. It is the miniature quality. Maybe it's a control thing!!

Sun M: nice theorising, but I'm not really "girlie" or materialistic in that way.

I think It's because you have a fascination for detail.

When I was little I remember my first day at nursery school... as soon as I went in there I made a beeline for the dolls house! Growing up I didn't get a "proper" dolls house until I was about 9. I usually had a one made out of boxes! I'm 34 now and I still love dolls houses. I bought my twin daughters one each when they were 6 weeks old! They are turning out to be real dolly girls now they are almost 3! So maybe its a part of you holding onto your childhood. Or maybe you didn't have a dolls house and you are making up for lost time. Either way I see nothing wrong in it. In fact they say the smaller the doll the older the child! ENJOY!

Maybe in a previous life you lived in one of the worlds visited by Gulliver - were the Lilliputians tiny sorts?!
If you really like doll houses you want to go to Windsor Castle. I was there at the weekend and one of the exhibits was Queen Mary's doll house which even has running water! How cool is that!
Now don't be getting too excited at the thought!!

I'm the same. I didn't like the bigger dolls either. I think possibly its because we can project the image we would like to have onto the dolls at a fraction of the cost!, the same goes with the furniture. We can do everything we would love to be able to do with our own houses. Also the minatures are just soo cute!

The psychological answer? It probably comes down to social conditioning - all your playful, aesthetic sensibilities as a woman, are trained to be focused upon the home and the nest-building instinct. Of course, on a different school of theory, it could be suggested that you have a bourgeoisie fixation for material possessions. It's a difficult one to judge, given that you haven't attached additional details with your question - most psychologists would scrutinise your memories, experiences...etc... to decide the reason for your fascination.

I have a question for you.
If doll's houses were just for children-then why are they so ornate and expensive(and I know a lot of work has gone into replica minis).
I have seen (wanted to buy) dolls furniture that cost more than my 'real' furniture.
Doll's houses are great and they can be passed down through generations.

I adore them too! I love anything that is miniature. I made a doll house out of old red stained fence boards, It is my favorite pieces of furniture! I have no idea why I'm enamored with this stuff also but its something i love and wont ever stop enjoying.

It probably is a control thing. I'd guess that you see them as an ideal which you can't see yourself achieving in reality. To be able to control the perfect examples of a humanity which is going down the toilet in reality gives you confidence and a sort of hope. If I were you, I'd invest in a copy of the Sims and take your obsession into the 21st century.

Because we are all little girls at heart.... I bought myself my first dolls house about 6 years ago.... cost a bloody fortune... and so did the furniture, but when I'm alone and no one's looking I play with it!! lol!!!
It will be eventually passed down and I hope cherished.

i would say, your notcontent, with decorating your own home, and within that, moving your own fridge, or wall papering is difficult.... so you bought another cave to play in....... its why so many women love buy to let.. they get to have loads of houses, to decorate.... which is a nightmare, because, now everywhere you try and rent has been done up, on the cheap, by some house proud woman, who will enevitably say when you leave, it was pristine when you mmoved in, give me your deposite.......
