Believe me, I am not by any means suggesting where I live (UK) is perfect. There is no suggestion in this question that America isnt a model society, I am just wondering, if you are American, and you think it the world greatest country, what are your reasons, I am curious?

You don't know that. Most Americans I've met have apologised to me for being such a sexist, racist, insular and autocratic nation.

Very good question.
I think the brief answer is that a democracy or republic is so much better than a monarchy, dictatorship, communism or any other form of government. Then our success in the industrial age and wars over the last two hundred years enabled our country to become the most technologically advanced country
on earth.
I fear that greed and arrogance are threatening to destroy it like they have destroyed so many cultures in the past. We have already lost most of our production jobs. Now we can't afford our own medicine, housing, workers pensions, and the gap between the extremely wealthy and the average person is unbelievable. The middle class is getting pushed down into the lower class and everything worth having is already owned by the wealthy or large corporations. We have dynasties of Bushes and Kennedys to the point only the wealthy or those supported by the wealthy can have any hope to be elected to office. Not one incumbent was defeated. That is pathetic.
The same is true in the private sector. The only way to get many of the best jobs is to either be related to someone or know the right people which makes our culture somewhat resemble a caste system and does not let the best qualified person get the job. If you haven't done it before, they use that as an excuse to not hire you. Well how does anyone get experience if no one will hire you unless you have experience??
Catch 22.
Meanwhile they keep re-hiring the same incompetent or criminal people over and over again because they are part of the Elite club, and then give them multimillion dollar severance pay or bonuses when they screw things up again.
Therefore, the promise of democracy where the people run the country has been corrupted.
I won't go on with this because it could become a book. Let me just end by saying that this American is very proud of the principles this country was built on and it's attempts to live up to them but extremely disappointed by what uncontrolled greeed has been allowed to do to it over the last 25 years. It isn't Bush and it isn't Clinton it is the system as a whole that is corrupted.

I am an American, have been since birth. Have loved this country up until 5 years ago. It'sour government to blame. These people are the ones who are to take care of us, protect us, we are suppose to look up to them. I have lost faith in them. Sadly I've been voting Republican in the past 3 elections (sorry) but I am prolife and I don't want Democrates to have control. Personally I don't want anyone tohave control. Isn't it suppose to be for the people, by the people. There are millions more citizens not in office than there is in office. Why can't we have a voice? Plus I hear all these surveys about everythings and not once has someone asked me a survey question. I think many are made up by the media.
I'm don't know where else I'd want to live. Don't know much about other countries so I'm stuck here for now. But I don't like it.

Most Americans I know are too busy apologising for their foreign policy to take a position on model societies. My response is usually to commiserate, because ours is just as bad.
Never mind, the squid will soon rise up and take over the world anyway, so it won't matter who thinks they have the best models.

Too many complacent middle class slobs.
It's the world's biggest scam. Once every four years you choose moron A or moron B and congratulations, you live in a 'Democracy' where the people are in control rather than some fatcat oil millionaire who got the job through family pedigree. Or have I misunderestimated something here?

What does that mean? I know I am no model of society. Get over yourself!!!!!! You must be from some foreign country. Why do foreign people think they are better than Americans?

Because many of them are not well travelled enough to look beyond and be open to the fact that there is a whole world beyond America's borders.

We are the richest country in the world. You don't get to be that by being a third world country.
