A gateway is a system (integration of software and hardware) that acts as a bridge between two dissimilar type of networks.

The SMS gateway is hence a gateway that facilitates the communication between internet (TCP/IP network) and Mobile(GSM Network). Using an SMS Gateway you can communicate between a PC connected to internet and and a GSM mobile phone.

The most common example of this service is Mobile Portals (like 8888 for Indiatimes or 8243 for Rediff etc.)
These four digit numbers (like 8888 or 8243) acts like aliases for gateway ports just like domain names (yahoo.com) works for a particular IP address.

To communicate between two TCP/IP nodes we need the TCP/IP addresses of the two nodes.
But to communicate between a TCP/IP node (PC) and a GSM Node (a cellphone), we need a gateway that resolves the designatedTCP/IP address into the corresponding GSM address and vice versa.

From what i could gather-
It is a sevice provided by a professional telecom firm for clients who use sms as a business tool. they can be of following types--

1. Who use it for sending-- like banks (credit statement etc), Restaurants (spl offers) indiatimes/yahoo (sending mobile content like ringtones) and
2. Who use it for recieving-- like so so many companies from television channels to inverter makers (like u r supposed to send some particular word to a particular number if u r interested in a product or service, for eg send ARR by sms to a particular number if u r interested in worldspace station)

So these companies use the sms gateway to send and recieve smses.

These gateways have an advantage that they can send and recieve very high number of smses, they do not get effected by congestion as they will use services by some other provider if one's network is down, they send stuff under the client's name for eg when you will get sms it will be from ICICI and not some phone number
