Well..I'd have to be pretty sure of myself unless it was a gay bookstore. If not, you could always "reach" for a book that is in front of him and say "excuse me" and make eye contact. A str8 guy won't make much contact, if you smile..a gay guy will prob smile back.
Ask if he's read a book that is in the section you are both in...or ask if he sees a book (name a book) on the shelf. Your best bet really is to go to a gay bookstore. Any guy in there will at least be nice and talk to ya.

Load your arms up with a couple of big books so you need both hands to carry them, but add a few smaller ones near the top. Walk near him or behind him and lean over so the smaller one drops. If he's a gentleman and he's looking at you, he'll bend over to pick it up. If he's in front of you, just simply ask him if he could help you. Maybe even get him to balance the number of books as you head to the counter or table or couch, whatever is there. This could also work in a library. If it's a bookstore, just say they are all for school or maybe or they're ones you're thinking of buying, but you wanted to look through them all one more time. Then ask him what he's there for or what he likes to read. This is just something I thought of at the top of my head. I've never tried it.

If you are going on your first trip with your boyfriend? Why are you asking about picking someone up in a book store?

Talk to him about the book he's choosing/looking for...his tastes in reading...his tastes in sexual partners...
Why do you ask these things?
