It is important not to underestimate the role of the mind control a kidnapper can use on his victim. In the case you refer to, this evil man also had the advantage of his captive being a young girl. She spent almost half her life in his clutches and he effectively was her world. In the end she did escape of course, and I do not think it has been established whether or not she had opportunities before where she was in the garden unwatched.
There is an excellent book the title of which I cannot recall about a case in the US where a man kept a girl in a box under his bed for years, and then in a underground dungeon for many more. She believed he was part of a cult that had many members and if she escaped they would seek vengeance and/or kill her - she had nowhere to run to, or so she thought. She even went out on her own and returned under her own 'freewill' such was her belief in this false construct. Even after her escape and his incarceration she wrote to him in prison.

Well I do recall the authorities saying she may have had 'Stockholm Syndrome' which would mean her captor wouldn't need to be as vigilant as time went by
"The Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological state in which the victims of a kidnapping develop a relationship with their abductor, resulting in sympathy for the kidnapper and sometimes an aversion to co-operate with the police. The name of the syndrome derives from a robbery known as the 'Norrmalmstorg drama' in Stockholm in 1973."

She was just 10 years old when she was kidnapped. Unfortunately it's so easy to totally brainwash a child that young.
Actually, it's incredibly easy to brainwash ADULTS! So...
But this guy obviously realized the game was over the minute she escaped, and just went out to kill himself. PIty he didn't do it a lot sooner.

You can fear for your life or that of your loved ones. The person you are talking about was just a child when he took her and he put the fear of God in her.
