Today the thin-look is still 'in' and women use liposuction, gastric reductions and fad diets (2 name a few!) in a bid to achieve waifdom. This look, thanks to world-wide mass media, is sadly becoming globally homogenised

a waif is someone/something abandoned/unclaimed etc.

maybe it is referring to the life of being abandoned. =D lol.
