As I tell my personal finance students, the KEY to effective budgeting is to be realistic and accurate. Make a full listing of the money coming in and going out on a regular monthly basis. Even the "little things!"

For example, that $2 daily coffee ends up costing you $40 a week. Money that could be saved, or spent on something better.

By monitoring spending habits, we learn where our money truly goes, and that's most important! Really looking at all the things we spend money on, and those amounts, we generally are shocked to see how much it really adds-up.

Effective budgeting needs a reality check--an honest and complete look at your monthly income and expenses.

Hiya

Draw up a list of your income and your expenditure over the month. How much you have coming in and how much you have coming out. One list will be your wage etc. and any other money, and the one going out will include bills (gas, electricity, water etc.)....

Then (hopefully) your expenditure will be less that your income and you can divide the amount left into 4 which will give you how much you have on extras each week... some money for food and some for going out and treats etc. (new clothes)...

That worked for me! I found it hard to make the transition from living with my parents to being on my own. This helped me a lot.

Hope it helps you.
Best wishes and happy spending!

Check your area for a free or low cost budget class. Consumer credit counseling may know one, habitat for humanities send new receivers of homes to one as a qualification part of the process. It should also be open to anyone.

Don’t focus so much on Wal-Mart to grocery shop. Check every store for deals. If you can handle generic verses name brand you can save that way. Don’t think that all generics taste bad. Check all dollar store type places for stuff you would use monthly and save such as foil and cleaning supplies. Check flea markets they have deals to save on so many items hard to explain all. Teach the kids that a cartoon characters cereal is no different than one without and it saves more money. Use a notebook to keep track of spending including sodas at a gas station to see where you are spending. Check out when a man name Dave Ramsey may air in your area

Clean house and get rid of junk to sale or even trade (if you want 1 certain book and you have 5 you don’t want, you can trade them for the book you want, maybe get money back and it reduces clutter) people use ebay for that too.

If you have kids teach them to stop wasting, make sure they take care of their stuff so you don’t have to pay more to fast. Make sure soap and shampoo is not wasted, if you have to much bar soap in a shower and only use one of them place the others where no water can evaporate it or make cleaning a pain. Check the paper often for sales of only the stuff you need. When a sale on food items like 3 for a dollar cans happen, buy a little extra so that when money is tight you still have enough food in the house. You can rotate over time so that you don’t over stock your food storage items you saved. (This saved us when hubby lost hours) make sure your house is weather proofed for energy saving which saves money. Turn off unnecessary appliances and unplug, because even if you don’t use it the plug still draws power. Get energy saver lights. I hardly use the gas stove so we just cut off the gas line to it so it wouldn't burn all the time even when you dont use it. It is still burning gas.

The many different saving ideas save money, which gives more money to budget. Even recycling web sites give ideas that save even more money around the house. Make a full travel one time out shopping plan so you don’t waste gas going back and forth, like a big loop and back. Do many online bill paying or over the phone to save on going to there main offices. Always look into ways to save on car insurance and see what will give you the most discounts. Do the same for phone, cable, Internet or cell phone. Think of habits you could do without that could save money.
I could give you more money saving ideas that can also help a budget plan direction as well, but it would take up way to much space. Good luck and god bless in your direction.

It's sounds simple and is not meant to be "smart." Earn more than you spend and put away at least 5% of your net income.
