If they didn't then some dumb lawyer would say it was cruel and unusual punishment.

A lot of things about the death penalty are weird. A very ill person cannot be executed. The powers that be wait until the prisoner is well and then execute him (or her). If a person is mentally ill and will not understand being executed, they can (and do) medicate the person until he is lucid and no what is going on. Then they execute him.

It does not make sense to me either.

Yeah, it is pretty stupid isn't it? I always wondered why.....maybe the nurse/doctor doing it is on autopilot and it is just a habit for them to swab the area before putting a needle into the area.

Personally, cause they are stupid and wanna waste taxpayers money on useless crap like that instead of things it should be really going for.

This is one of the reasons why America is in debt, wasteful spending.

The idea being that although they are executing this person - they are doing it in the most humane way possible.

its just standard procedure. the person on death row is still treated like a "person."
