God teaches to love one another. and love your neighbor as thy self. But remember charity starts at home. So if it comes to a situation where you have to choose between yourself and your neighbor, of course, self preservation comes first.

No one exists just for self. One exists for self and others at the same time. In family, the head does the things for the survival of all the people in the family. The mother cooks food for all. The requirements of self and others within the group or interdependent and mingled. There doesn't exist a line but decided by the one with responsibility and authority.

When you water the root of a tree you simultaneously nourish all the leaves, fruits, flowers, etc. In the same way, the best way to help yourself and every living being is to be engaged in the devotional service of the Supreme Lord, the root of all existence. By pleasing the Lord in devotional service, we experience the highest ecstasy and become full in transcendental knowledge. In that state of God consciousness we are then able to do the best service to all others by guiding them on the path of spiritual realization.

So there doesn't have to be an 'either or' decision. Serve the Lord's desires and you will please yourself to the highest degree and you will then be in a position to do the best service to everyone else.

We all must create barriers in our lives, whatever seems comfortable to you. Set your goals, figure out how you are going to get there, everyone has a price so set yours as high as you can afford, fence out those things that take you away from your goals, and that leaves a lot of things you can do without failing to get where you're going. Good luck!
One more thing, don't forget you must reconsider the direction your life is going frequently, and stop to heal the battle damage life will inflict.

You should always serve others, especially those whom you love or are supposed to love. When you do this you're happier and thus you're serving yourself at the same time. What's better than being happy anyway?
