Most liberal arts colleges are looking for well balanced students. For example, Library could be the community work, what extracurricular activity do you do at school?
If you are applying to a religious school they may look for involvement in church youth groups. If you are going to a specialty college, they will look for activities in that area such as music, marine biology, What major are you thinking about? It would be helpful long term if your volunteer work was in the area in which you are thinking of having a career. Enjoy your volunteer work. Don't think worry so much about what the personal payoff will be.

Volunteering in a library is an important service that greatly improves your community and can improve you as well.
So many people see a library just as a place to find "old books" or popular fiction. Libraries are much, much more than this.
All three of our older children have done volunteer work at libraries.... not just shelving books either. They did computer work, worked on indexing projects and helped develop library presentations. Not only did they benefit the library and its users, but they also learned some basic skills themselves.
People in most colleges understand the importance of libraries and should be impressed by your volunteer work. Some employers understand this also.
I see nothing wrong in volunteering in other areas... criminal justice, gardens, children services.... But don't ever let somebody belittle the work you've done in libraries. You may not understand how you have helped out those around you totally but you have been a great help to others.
Thank you for volunteering in your local library!

IMO, it would look great on both college and job applications. To volunteer for ANYTHING is commendable, and to volunteer at or in excess of 300 hours is fantastic! Also, libraries are so very important to the community and its school system as we want all people to be literate as well as to gain knowledge from books. Good luck to you!

Colleges love people that volunteer...shoot it was a $3000 scholarship for me. Keep up on the hours but expand your horizons a little bit... anything that directly helps people and animals is great! Plant flowers for the elderly or help at the local dog shelter. Start a group at your school that focuses on helping the community (there's another scholarship "leadership)

Volunteering is always good, no matter what the cause. However, it will be the most beneficial to you to volunteer in an area of interest to you, such as at a police station if you plan to do Criminal Justice work. This will show that you are committed to learning the subject.

I think 300 hours at the library looks good. That's enough to show you are committed. However, I don't think many "real" jobs would care.

It may look impressive to them, but do more hours and try to find some more things to do like volunteering with a youth organization. They eat that stuff up.
