(Greek mythology) a box that Zeus gave to Pandora with instructions that she not open it; she gave in to her curiosity and opened it; all the miseries and evils flew out to afflict mankind

In Greek mythology, as a punishment for Prometheus' stealing fire from the gods and giving it to Man, a pretty dumb and over-curious woman was sent to his brother (Epimetheus?). He had possesion of a box (I forget how he aquired it) which contained all of the negative emotions we know today - hate, despair, fear, sadness, to name a few. Pandora eventually found said box, and of course opened it, letting all the bad stuff out. It has since been known as "Pandora's Box."

In common usage, opening a Pandora's box refers to entering into a situation which will have not only serious negative consequences, but a lot of them. There is also usually an element of some small, but decidedly insignificant, benefit (such as seeing what was inside, in the original Pandora's Box), which is why anyone is considering entering the situation in the first place.

"Pandora's Box is loosely adapted from two Wedekind plays comprising the 'Lulu' tragedy. The story deals with a beautiful, amoral woman who destroys all those who come under her spell, but who, as a Soho prostitute, falls victim to Jack the Ripper. Under Pabst's direction, the film is a masterpiece of atmosphere, camera movement and editing; it is also one of the most sexually charged films ever made, due largely to the incendiary performance of the American actress Louise Brooks .... All film faces, director G.W. Pabst must have known, are two-way mirrors. In Pandora's Box, Louise Brooks' impassive, enigmatic visage is a wide-eyed reflecting pool for the sexual depravity which her beauty seems to inspire and which, in the end, haunts her. ... her indifference is at once distancing and magnetic, qualities which Pabst used ingeniously. In the film's most glowing scene, amid the feverish, shimmering sensuality of the backstage bustle, Brooks emerges (as Lotte Eisner has written) 'like some pagan idol,' throwing the background out of focus, perhaps because the whole of the film is contained in that face."

In Greek mythology, Pandora ("all gifted") was the first woman, fashioned by Zeus as part of the punishment of mankind for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire. The myth of Pandora is very old, appears in several distinct versions, and has been interpreted in many ways. In all literary versions, however, the myth is a kind of theodicy, addressing the question of why there is evil in the world.: Hesiod, both in his Theogony (briefly, without naming Pandora outright, line 570) and in Works and Days, ca. 700 BC, has a very early told and literary version of the Pandora story. [1] The evidence of the vase-painters reveals another, earlier aspect of Pandora.
