In India, Burlyngton (I hope I spelled right) was one such famous mail order company in those days. Still a faint board of the company is seen in NOIDA, where they used to have their office.

I think its when you order for a product from a brochure or catalogue & the product it delivered to you through the post/mail. Payment is made on delivery, or could be in advance.
