I live just north of Seattle. I love it here. Because of the Cascade Mountains, eastern Washington has great temperature ranges, from really hot in the summer to very snowy and cold in the winter. Here on the western half we have very moderate weather, and not as much rain as everyone seems to think we do. However, we do have a lot more cloudy, overcast days than the eastern half of the state does. Seattle, Bellevue, and the surrounding area is by far the most expensive, but you can find some decent prices out in the suburbs. Not as decent as they were a few years ago, but definitely more reasonable than the Seattle area in general.

If you were thinking of eastern Washington, Spokane is nice. I went to college there. I had some friends who used to live in Wenatchee, and they liked it; it is really close to the mountains if you like to ski. I prefer western Washington because the weather is a lot milder. The Everett/Marysville area is getting more expensive, but still a great place to look. Or Monroe. Were you looking for a suburb-type place, or a small town atmosphere? If you look at a state map, there area lot of cities near the I-5 corridor that would be nice places to live.

The west side of Puget Sound is nice, too, and affordable, but you have to take a ferry to get to Seattle. That can run into some money and extra travel time if you work in Seattle and have to commute (which a lot of people do).

Most of the King County is very expensive. Going outward makes you easy to afford a house, except on the islands. I am in Western Washington now, but I've lived in Eastern Washington in the past. If you don't mind long rainy days in the winter, Western side has lots of fun places for shop & dine. Summer is perfect. If you prefer snow in the winter, dry hot weather in the summer, then you'll like Eastern side better. East of the mountain(North Cascade) is less expensive to live. Both side offer lots of nature, fun places and it is beautiful. You'll love it. For you, I would recommend Wenatchee(Eastern). It's not too big, but it's not a too small city. It's only a 2 hour drive from Seattle.

Western Washington has the better weather than the Eastern side. Olympia and the areas that way, South of Tacoma are all cheaper than Seattle. Also, the other direction Everett and north are all good. I used to live in Bellingham and really enjoyed it. I live too close to Seattle now, it is too expensive for what you get, unless you really shop around. The other side of the sound, Bremerton and the like, are lower cost as well. It really depends what you are looking for to do.

I wouldn't want to live in Eastern Washington. I suggest Western Washington. You should live near Seattle.
