Artemis=is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. In later times she was conflated with the goddess Diana of Roman mythology. In Etruscan mythology, she took the form of Artume.

Artemis was the virgin goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, moon, and childbirth. She was worshipped as a fertility/childbirth goddess in some places since, according to some myths, she assisted her mother in the delivery of her twin. During the Classical period in Athens, she was identified with Hecate. Artemis also assimilated Caryatis (Carya) and Ilithyia.

Young Athenian girls between the ages of five and ten were sent to the sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron to serve the Goddess for one year. During this time the girls were known as arktoi, or little she-bears. A myth explaining this servitude relates that a bear had gotten into the habit of regularly visiting the town of Brauron, and the people there fed it, so that over time the bear became tame. A young girl teased the bear, and, in some versions of the myth it killed her, while in other versions it clawed her eyes out. Either way, the girl's brothers killed the bear, and Artemis was enraged. She demanded that young girls "act the bear" at her sanctuary in atonement for the bear's death.

In many parts of ancient Greece, just before marriage young women would dedicate toys, dolls, and locks of their hair to Artemis.
In Greek mythology Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. Leto had to find a place where the sun had never shone to give birth to the two due to a curse set by Hera, Zeus' wife. For this, Zeus rose an island that had been floating underwater and not yet touched by the sun. The island was Delos, and Leto gave birth there. In many tales, Artemis was born first and then assisted Leto in the birth of her brother. However, there are cases when the two were born at the same time. Artemis and Apollo were born greater than any of Hera's children.

At three years old, Artemis asked her father, Zeus, while sitting on the god king's knee, to grant her several wishes. She asked to never have to be married and to have lop-eared hounds, stags to lead her chariot, and nymphs as her hunting companions. He granted her wishes. All of her companions remained virgins, and she guarded her chastity very, very closely.

Diana was the Roman version if I remember correctly ( I do not study the Roman pantheon as much as I do other pantheons), while Artemis, the Greek, is the virgin huntress, by many accounts, connected to the moon and its many phases. Artemis is much like a sister, mother, protector and lover to her chosen few loyal followers. Her brother, Apollo, was supposed to be her twin, and he is the sun god among many other things.

Artemis is wise, passionate and strong. She is also viewed favorably by both feminists and non-feminists alike.

There is more, but I suggest picking up a copy of Goddesses and Heroines by Patricia Monaghan. It is a wonderful reference (although not always completely accurate) and a real fun read!

Artemis is the twin sister of the God Apollo (God of light and prophecy), child of Leto and Zeus. She is the Virgin (Pallas= owned by no man) Goddess of the Hunt and she was attended by maidens and youths who swore oaths of chastity. She and her brother were great archers and together were also Gods of plague. When people died suddenly, or many people died, they were given credit for it. Also, Artemis was given credit for the death of mothers during childbirth. She was given offerings by young wives before giving up their virginity to their husbands. She was also the protectress of young people. She is angered by lewd behaviour, careless treatment of wilderness areas, overhunting and arrogance.

She was associated with the Roman Diana (Romans always associated the Gods of people they conquered with their own), daughter of Jupiter and Latona, though she's not exactly the same. Diana and subsequently Artemis eventually became associated with the moon, though there is no reason for this in either Greek or Roman myth. Diana (or Dia Anna) was the protectress of slaves who could seek asylum in her temples and was especially popular with the poor. She is also a midwife and protectress of children. Whether she was before she was associated with Artemis or whether this came after, I don't know. At any rate, her center of worship was actually in Ephesus, which is in Turkey. She was often depicted with a deer or with dogs. Dogs formed her retinue and she was known as the "***** goddess" by folks who didn't like her.

In modern Traditional Witchcraft (possibly risen from Italian Tradition, Strega??), Diana is the mother of Aradia by Lucifer (the morning star, not Satan, in Greek Eosphorus, child of Eos and Kephalos, though there is no Greek version of this myth where Artemis remains staunchly virgin and thus, childless) and sent Aradia to teach witches their craft.

Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and the twin sister of Apollo (the god of the sun). She was a the goddess of the hunt (she used a bow and arrows). She was a virgin and surrounded herself with virgin nymphs. She guarded her chastity very fiercely and could be very jealous and ruthless when angered.

Goddess of hunting and moon, really really beautiful, she didn't live on the Olympo but in her holy forest. She was daughter of Latona (a human) and Zeus (a god) and sister of Apollo, the handsome god of sun and music.
