Absolutely. Read a book by physicist Brian Greene called "The Elegant Universe." The book is mainly about a new theory describing the nature of the universe, but the first few chapters will answer exactly your questions in a step-by-step manner. These theories are very interesting and not as difficult as you might expect. Go to your local book store and find the physics/science/nature department and you'll be sure to find it. Also, don't miss his second book called "The Fabric of the Cosmos" which is also very interesting. If you have any other questions or want to know of any other books on this subject, feel free to contact me at horn_number_2@hotmail.com I hope that helped. Good luck!

'A Brief History of Time' by Einstein is a good place to start.
