do royalty perform any function that warrants their excessive cost? Do they do any real or actual work or is it just cutting ribbons and attending tea parties and visiting sick children to make inane comments. The usual nonsense is that royalty are tourist attractions therefore they make more money than they cost, which is completely idiotic, its like saying burning a billion dollars as a side show is a good idea as long as it makes a profit. England would still have as many tourists royals or no royals, in fact they would have more if they could use the money squandered on royals for improvments to tourism. So are Royals parasites, if not then show real factual reasons they are not, rather than emotional claptrap and if they serve some actual purpose explain why they cant do it cheaper.

I am Australian so I am talking about all royals. And as requested no emotional claptrap which means such things as they are inspirational and the like, you dont need to pay for inspiration and as for them being a luxury: planet earth calling, emotional clap trap. Charities rely on people doing things for free, not getting paid to. They employ people, so what? Thats like saying hitler employed people in his gas chambers.

Royalty are parasites. They are the remnants of a time gone by when most people were held in servitude (slavery) and they reigned simply because they were addicted to violence and they terrorized people. They were no better than the Mafia but when they came to power there was nothing to stop them.

Royalty was historically very important, without some of the stronger british monarchs their would not have been an empire, when George III went mad and became a weak govenor: it was left to lesser mortals to oversee the empire: during this period the the British Empire lost America through a poor notion of taxation....
These days they could be considered parasites, depending on your view of them, however their part in diplomacy is crucial to world affairs.
the Queen of England recently held a massive state benefit for the French heads of state, something that the British government (or any other for that matter) could not have hoped to accomplish, it was ultimately only a large lavish formal dinner: but the links between the two countries (who had been falling out) were re-forged, and the trade negotiations on farming produce exports have subsequently opened backup: worth potentially billions to the beef industry...
Another little thing as an example: The Commonwealth was an entirely Royal dreamt up plan...it has benefitted all 53 states within it since its' conception...including Australia that just gained billions from the Commonwealth games it just held in Melbourne, I went to the games: you guys did an awesome job, thank the royalty for it and no one else from a historical perspective...this sort of thing can not be quantified, but can not be dismissed...
Tourists would come anyway, true...but the romance of the castles, seeing the flag flying and knowing that that means the queen is at home in Windsor....something that stirs the soul of a British person or a royal seeking tourist, it is a shame in this modern world that such simple joys are lost maybe...

i am English and i can confidently say that the pomp and circumstance of the monarchy is widely resented in the north where i live. I want born in Kent in the south where the royal tradition remains somewhat popular, but, even there, the popularity is solely based on a nostalgia for tradition and a desire to preserve heritage. Where i live now, Liverpool, the general feeling is that the royals should heave ho and stop stealing our bloody money!! So you see that the country is by no means agreed on the subject any more than Americans are over the gun issue.
PS personally i feel that parasites is a perfectly apt term. Well done!!

I think of them as kind of a luxury more than as parasites. People like luxuries. The British royal family is kind of attractive and entertaining. They employ a lot of people. You should check out the royal website for job openings. (Sorry I don't have it handy) I suppose the country could get along without them. In America we have learned that a freight train can get along without a caboose. A train without a caboose is more cost effective but not nearly as satisfying to watch.

The royal family are parasites but they cannot help it. That's the way the system works. Lets start afresh with an elected head of state. At least then we have a choice.

I don't quite understand why England still has royalty. What do they really do? They obviously don't run the country, so they're just there mooching money from the taxpayers. It seems all they do is get on the tabloids once in a while.
You guys should get rid of them.

Royalty is archaic and disgusting.
But then, I'm an american.
"The english see american gun ownership the same way americans see english royalty; strange, outdated, and quite possibly detrimental to the survival of civilization"
You guys don't actually give your royalty money, do you? As in taxes or something? Because if you do, you really ought to stop.

I think they performe the little roles left to them such as diplomatic & tourist attraction well. They also help to keep the gossip tabloids going.

Royalty, all royalty are parasites, they evolved at a time when the most efficient thieves and strongest bullies ruled. Stupid people worship roayalty and wave flage at them etc. Royalty should be executed.
