A great many questions involve issues that people have already dealt with - sometimes with twists, so that you have to THINK sometimes about how to answer the new questions, and -- if you pay attention to other answers, there are a lot of really smart people out there with answers that you may not have thought of !
You can help someone avoid hours or days of searching for the answer to something that took you hours or days...
As someone already stated, if you are stuck babysitting a computer, or are in a situation where you are waiting for something, ANSWERS is an interesting and USEFUL way to spend your time...

Its the same way people make open source software, weather its recognition, trying to help a community, inspiration, tha fact taht you are not forced to do it, or you just have nothing else to do.
