Good question.
You would probably understand better the importance of exercises?
You might also learn better how to keep the students interested and motivated. But it depends on who you work with and what kind of person are you. You could become bored with your profession, or in reverse a more versatile person.

Did you read "The Magus" by John Fowels? It was about an english teacher working in Greece.

There, students are highly respectable of their teachers. There, education is spoon fed. There teacher is the centre of education.

You learn pretty quick who you have to please to have your contract renewed. That may mean you have to give up methodology that conflicts with the decision-maker's idea of what good ESL teaching is.
