Wow, you guys must have powerful boxes. I spent less than $300 to get my ECS 848A7 (socket 775) motherboard and Pentium 4 Hyperthreading. I've since overclocked from 3ghz to 3.54ghz:)
I'd recommend getting a good motherboard, one with plenty of slots to upgrade RAM past 2gb (my limit unfortunately), uses PCI express for video card, etc. And I would honestly recommend going Pentium over AMD for value alone. I just hate how AMD never makes available their CPU speeds and when you finally find out what it is, you end up paying about $200 - $250 for around 2 to 2.5ghz. Sure it might be 64 bit...which will benefit you someday down the road when software can catch up...

Dude, gaming requires performance, and $400 means a budget machine. Don't get me wrong, you can certainly play games on a $400 computer, but it won't be anything like the high-end gamng machines. Probably the best you could do would be to build a computer with lots of expansion/upgrade potental.

In 2006, I simply don't think this can be had. $400 built wisely can craft a responsive system for checkers and virus scans but little else. The one thing you do have in your favor is the fact that AMD and Intel are in the midst of an all out price war.
