I know what it means - just wondered how the word itself came about.

Most people think that this a new word that has come into use since 2004, however I was used to hearing the word some 40 years ago when playing with local gypsy children, I beleive that the word Chav means Child or Kid and would have had Romany roots, I have had a dig around and this web page may be of use to you

i believe the word chav originated when the snobs that own their own houses decided to take the p*ss out of other people less fortunate as around where i live a lot of the posh tools will call you a chav for walking in your own street
