I have failed the emissions test even though i used one of those treatments that is supposed to promise that you'll pass......someone told me that if you added a bottle or 2 of rubbing alcohol to the gas tank it would do the same thing.....i'm not going to try it but, is that even safe?......has anyone else ever heard of this??

Alcohol is a fuel, much like gasoline. It burns and produces no emissions which your state detector will detect as a "bad" emission. However, that does not change what your engine does with the gasoline which produces the emissions your state feels is "bad" but rather may reduce the quantity of the bad things in the exhaust by dilution. So, it may work by diluting the bad stuff to be at an acceptable level for the test. I live in the Pacific Northwest and a few years ago, they introduced alcohol as an additive to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in ALL gasoline we have for sale here. It worked. The air quality here has become better since alcohol was introduced in spite of the fact more gallons of gas are used every day on average.

There are a couple of things which can reduce your emissions, retard the spark and lean out the carburator, but both of these methods will make your engine run less well than it did when adjusted correctly and in some states is illegal.

Bottom line: skip the additives and get your engine tuned properly so it passes the tests, in spite of the cost, and you will be better off in the long term.

Rubbing Alcohol In Gas Tank

Never put rubbing alcohol into your gas tank.... it contains water and is very corrosive to the metal and rubber parts in your cars fuel system. You can however purchase a product commonly known as "dry gas" from your local parts store. It is Isopropyl alcohol that does not contain water (assuming the bottle is sealed). If your test was marginal, add a few bottles of Dry Gas to your fuel tank and remove your air filter then try to retake your Emission test. Why? alcohol burns much cleaner than gasoline and even a small amount can affect your cars emissions. Removing the air filter allows more air to pass through the engine which can also slightly reduce the the numbers just remember to put the filter back in immediately after the test as running a car without the filter for a long period of time is not good for it. These tricks will only work if you failed by a small margin... if you failed big time it's time to take your car to a mechanic who can diagnose and repair the real problem.

You shouldn't put anything into your car's gas tank that isn't a petroleum product. Internal combustion engines are meant for gasoline or similar petroleum products only. If you were to put rubbing alcohol in your gas tank, it would likely ruin your engine.

Your car needs a tune up. The only thing you put in a gas tank is gas. Additives don't work so save your money.

Yes, it's safe for your car, but don't overdo it. However, it will NOT help you pass the emissions test. Only a properly functioning emission system will pass the test. You might as well put mother's milk in your gas tank for all the good it will do you.

No I never heard that one, and don't trust it

and besides if you can't pass emissions then there is something wrong with your car. It maybe simply tuning up . and also if you can't pass emission you must be getting bad gas mileage too

Whoever said that wants you dead and isn't smart enough to breath. If you put rubbing alcohol in your tank it would explode.

NASCAR engines burn 110-octane leaded gasoline.
Indy cars burn pure methanol (a.k.a. wood alcohol, CH3OH).
Top Fuel dragsters and funny cars burn nitromethane (CH3NO2).
