The Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, has announced that a train service between Tiruchendur and Madurai or Chennai would be introduced if a feasibility study to be conducted in this connection favoured it.
Multi media campaign
Addressing the 4-day multi-media campaign commenced at Centenary Hall, Palayamkottai on Saturday, Mr. Velu said that he would inspect the ongoing metre gauge conversion between Tiruchendur and Tirunelveli on Sunday and take a final decision on the proposed train service after holding discussion with the officials concerned.
He said allocation of funds would be made for the gauge conversion between Tenkasi and Shencottai, "as the UPA Government at the Centre was keen on converting all metre gauges into broad gauge, particularly the metre gauge routes in Tamil Nadu, during its tenure".
Listing out the achievements of the Ministry of Railways after Mr. Manmohan Singh assumed office as Prime Minister, Mr. Velu said the Rameswaram rail bridge would be strengthened at the cost of Rs. 50 crore.
He said that his Ministry was prepared to approve the projects sent by the State Government.
The Minister released the souvenir of the multi-media campaign and former MP, S. Peter Alphonse, received the first copy.
Over 42 stalls have been set-up by banks, insurance companies, Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Southern Railways, Ministry of Defence, National Highways Authority of India and other Central Government agencies.

Tiruchendur is connected (indirectly) to Chennai by Nellai Express. You have to get down at Tirunelveli and take the passenger train to Tiruchendur. The passenger train timings are in sink with Nellai express.
Or, there are 4 or 5 trains to Tirunelveli from Chennai. Take one of them and travel to Tiruchendur by Bus. Its just an 1.5 hrs journey.
