The answer is going to be a matter of personal taste. And with bow/arrow archery, there are so many different types: kyudo, olympic recurve, barebow, compound (with and without mechanical release). Just go out and try different things and figure out what is most fun for yourself.

I owned an archery shop for 10 years. So I'll try to help. Crossbows are intended for disabled people that cannot pull a regular bow. They are legal in some states for anyone but in most you have to have a physical disability to hunt or shoot them in competition. They are easier to learn to shoot accurately
For the average person for hunting a regular recurve or compound is the way to go. I would recommend getting an experienced person to put the bow together and help you get started.
Going to K Mart and buying one then trying to learn to use it, is asking for alot of frustration. the bow the accessories (Sights rest, ) and the arrows need to match the equipment properly. And is easy to buy equip that does not match and will never shoot well. If you need more in depth help or have more questions EMail me at mad@iland.net
Also years ago crossbows were alot more powerful. Todays modern compounds are actually faster and have more power than a crossbow

A cross bow can give much more power and precision, but it takes the true feel out of being an archer. Archery is almost an artform when compared to using a crossbow.

Its almost like firing a musket compared to a rifle these days. Thos who like it, like it a lot.
