It means that something is either not one extreme or another, or it can mean it is mediocre and not very exciting or different.

Middle of the road were a band from the early 70's ,they were quite succesful , they were Folk/Pop & had great song titles like Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep (Which made it to number one)
Or it's the white line in th road?
Or you just sit on the fence

It's a phrase usually used to refer to quality. So if something is middle of the road it's not good, but it's not bad either. It's kind of intensely average.

It is music which is popular but not leading edge. Many radio stations are middle of the road.

It is a term of reference that is used when you are undecided on a subject. You come down on neither one side or the other so you are "middle of the road".

In the context you've put it in, in that quote, and the context I use it, it's a bad thing. It means something that has deliberately been made bland & boring so as not to offend ANYONE, so that everyone will like it.

See: Nickleback.

It means the same as 'sitting on the fence' you're neutral or looking at both sides and deciding which way to go!

You don't make an opinion one way or the other, you just stay "in the middle of the road".

You can get hit from either direction! :-) it means that you're too neutral to be of any good to anyone :-) but usually it's meant to mean that you of a balanced perspective.
